The department of Commerce started its journey in 1996 (C/851/238-Affl.dt.05.09.1996) at the undergraduate general level under the University of Calcutta. It was elevated to Honours level in 2001 (C/61/238-Affl.dt.08.01.2001). Today it offers both Honours and General degree course in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by the WBSU to which the college is affiliated. The CBCS Semester system was introduced in 2018.
Along with lecture method, emphasis given on audio-visual techniques, smart classes, seminar and remedial classes. Continuous internal assessment is an integral part of the CBCS system. The Second year and Third Year students also take part in project work as prescribed by the syllabus of WBSU. Today the department has three full time faculty members and two Govt. part time teachers.
The department has ICT enabled class rooms and a small departmental library. The students also take part in various extension activities. They also actively participate in different job oriented workshop conducted in college. The department also publishes wall magazine at a regular interval each year and organise educational tour and industrial visit.
The department along with proper education as conducted through classes, also emphasises on the various job oriented programmes for the students, which leads them to financial independence.
