WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

3 YEAR MULTIDISCIPLINARY UG COURSE

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics." — Paul Halmos

The Department of Mathematics at East Calcutta Girls' College offers a dynamic academic space where students explore both the depth of mathematical theory and its practical relevance. The focus is on building clear thinking, logical precision, and strong problem-solving ability through close academic guidance and an engaging learning environment.

Since 2018, the department has been operating under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), offering Mathematics as both a Core and a General Elective subject for B.Sc. students. From the academic session 2024–25, the department has adopted the curriculum framework of the National Education Policy 2020, as formulated and directed by West Bengal State University. This marks a transition towards a more flexible and multidisciplinary structure, allowing students greater choice, mobility, and scope for skill development.

The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematical concepts while integrating computational methods and emerging areas of study. Emphasis is placed on analytical thinking, application-oriented learning, and gradual exposure to research practices, enabling students to adapt to a wide range of academic and professional pathways.

The department encourages students to experience mathematics not just as a subject, but as a way of thinking — precise, creative, and deeply connected to the world around us.
