The Department of Sociology at East Calcutta Girls' College was established in 2001 under the University of Calcutta, and re-affiliated to West Bengal State University in 2008. Over the past two decades, it has grown into a thoughtful academic space.

The department offers undergraduate Honours and General courses under NEP system, guided by a committed team of faculty members. A well-stocked departmental library and a structured academic calendar ensure that students have every resource they need to thrive.

The department places strong emphasis on continuous internal assessment through tests, mentoring system while regularly organising extension lectures, awareness programmes, wall magazines, poster presentation, movie screening, educational tours and student seminars — creating a culture where learning is lively, relevant, and deeply connected to the development of self and society.
